TASK FORCE ON CHILD DOMESTIC WORKERS IN ASIA
The Task Force CDW comprising CWA partners in South and Southeast Asia was developed in 1996 with Visayan Forum Foundation as convenor. Shoishab (Bangladesh) hosted regional exchange programmes for field workers in 1997. A number of national activities were organized to follow up on the exchange, namely public awareness raising, baseline surveys, seminars/workshops in Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The first regional consultation on child domestic work was organized by Visayan Forum (Philippines) with CWA in 1998. That same year, CWA published a booklet, Behind Closed Doors: Child Domestic Workers, the Situation and the Response. The booklet presents the lives of child domestic workers in many countries in Asia and amplifies the voices of the few children who had the opportunity to share real-life stories.
The Task Force CDW had adopted the following objectives for the programme period 1999-2002:
- Strengthen and further develop the experiences of the Task Force CDW;
- Further develop ways and means to assist child domestic workers;
- Expand the issue to the interest of other CWA partners; and
- Facilitate the development of regional strategies on policy advocacy and campaign.
After its 2nd meeting in Manila, the task force agreed on the following priorities (2022-2005):
- Research and policy framework, including the development and promotion of good practices.
- Documentation and sharing of information, especially through a website and a circular.
- Advocacy on the development and enforcement of standards (including legislation), working with employers, with a focus on education and child participation.
- Capacity building of existing and new Task Force members, including child domestic workers and their associations.
- Networking and linkaging towards influencing institutions at national, regional, and international levels.
- Strengthening and linking, developing programs, and generating attention and action towards attacking the connection between trafficking and children as well as adults' entry into domestic work.
