Slave Farm - Edna May Valeroso

Edna is 16 years old from Davao City. She thought she was just to visit and have a vacation in Manila with her clique group for five days but what she did not know is that she left Davao City to be enslaved in the huge agricultural farm in Ilocos Norte. Her friend who happened to be the nephew of the unscrupulous recruiter deceived her and her 4 other friends. In November 2002, Edna and her friends arrived in Manila.

Verna, the recruiter handed her to her Chinese employer and disappeared. The Chinese employer drove her as far as the agriculture farm of Vigan, Ilocos Norte. There she spent each day for two months with backbreaking work like carrying sacks of rice and fertilizers. She was also the gatekeeper of the very huge farm. Onetime she tried to escape but was caught and as a consequence she was tied around a tree and left for the whole day to suffer the heat of the sun and tolerate hunger and thirst. Edna took courage to call on the agency for release from the employer. The agency responded to her request and she was brought to Cabanatuan City, branch office of the agency. There she was employed as a Kasambahay. She did not like the treatment of her employer so she escaped with a fellow kasambahay and sought employment in another household.

One month in the new household her friend encouraged her to go to Manila. She did not like the idea because she planned to earn money for her fare going back to Davao. But she was afraid to be left alone in the household so she went with the friend to Manila. They were employed in"banana storage" somewhere in Manila. She could not tolerate the inhumane condition in the workplace and the bad influence of her friend. What came to her mind during her desperate reflections was to call the youth center (Tambayan Center) in Davao where she used to join, for help. The said center in turn referred her case to Visayan Forum-Davao. Visayan Forum-Davao forwarded the case to central office in Manila and Edna was rescued on March 31, 2003. Edna decided not to file charges against the agency and employer because all she wanted was to go home to Davao and be with her illegitimate child. Visayan Forum provided for her transportation and facilitated her repatriation on April 2003. Edna's case was reported to DOLE-Region 11.
