World Day Against Child Labor 2004: Focus on Child Domestic Workers
The World Day Against Child Labor, celebrated around the globe every June 12, united various cultures and different races in the fight against child labor. This year, the celebrations centered on the issue of Child Domestic Work; considered by many countries as among the worst forms of child labor.
In the Philippines, more than one thousand child domestic workers, employers and social partners participated in a candlelight vigil calling for positive change and unified action on the issue of child domestic work. Prior to the candlelight vigil, representatives from various stakeholders-from the government, NGOs, student organizations, employer's groups, worker's groups, faith-based groups and children's organizations-attended a Domestic Worker's Forum. The child domestic workers presented their Call to Action and, in response, the various stakeholders gave their unwavering support and commitment to efforts addressing the issue of child domestic work.
In India, held a week-long celebration of the World Day Against Child Labor. In the Holy City of Varanasi, ASMITA held a candlelight vigil where local leaders and townsfolk attended the event. They also had a "Mega Mela", a big celebration, in the name of Child Domestic Workers in Varanasi where more than 1,000 people attended.
Child domestic workers where treated to an afternoon of fun and games.
