Batas Kasambahay is a proposed legislation that aims to protect domestic workers in the Philippines. It seeks to update scattered laws in line with the country’s international commitments such as, but not limited to, the Decent Work Agenda, elimination of child labor, elimination of forced labor and trafficking as well as elimination discrimination against women.

Batas Kasambahay thus seeks to increase minimum wage and to accord new social protection benefits such as PhilHealth to domestic workers. It also sets mandatory registration of domestic workers in all barangays nationwide. It also prescribes the use a formal contract stipulating minimum working conditions to govern employer-employee relationship.

In a broader context, the approval of this bill is a strong recognition of the dignity of every domestic worker without sacrificing equal protection to the rights their employers.
