Working for Debts

To his utter shock, Manong Mando a taxi driver in Davao saw on the tabloid that his daughter Gema was in jail. Her employer accused that she put rat poison into their food. He could not believe the sad plight of his daughter because months earlier, Gema was writing to him that she was always maltreated at work. She was literally crying to be rescued. Until, that day she was jailed and the letters did not come anymore.

Manong Mando sought the help of the local social worker who referred him to Visayan Forum. The NGO together with AKAP provided free transportation and legal assistance to help him win his daughter from the prisons. He had to leave his taxi driving for more than three months, and visited his daughter at the DSWD Juvenile Center in Manila everyday until the court agreed that the trial be held in Davao.
